First Day of School

So, summer is officially over for us. My kids went back to school today, and I have to admit, it is bitter-sweet. On one hand, I am sooo excited for a little less noise and chaos (and definitely less electronics!), but on the other hand, I am not looking forward to early mornings, packing lunches, or homework.

Every year, I have big dreams for how my children will look the first day back to school. In my mind, they look like this...

Or even this would be cool...

But, in reality, this is how they would rather look...

Or they would be happy in this...

Obviously, a little compromise was in order. And this is what we came up with...

My middle-schooler looks thrilled, right?

The two youngest aren't going to school today, but still wanted
to wear backpacks.

I guess I can't complain. They turned out pretty cute, right? It isn't the J. Crew-catalog-perfect-kids-look I hoped to see, but I'll take it!!

How was your kid's first day of school? Any fun outfits?

  1. I think they look fine! And who wouldn't want to wear gym clothes to school?

  2. I wore uniforms for most of my school years....

I do like those bright green sneakers! And who doesn't love a backpack?! :)

  3. I think they look pretty J Crew perfect. I mean, at least they weren't punching each other, right? Or is it just my kids who are guilty of that?

  4. How did I ever miss you have five boys??? Here's a gigantic ((HUG)) for you. You champion, you.... I have three boys and one girl. Granted, they're older now, but it wasn't that long ago I was chasing them constantly. I feel your pain. Never let anyone tell you you aren't a hero. 'Cause you are.

I'm happy school is about to start for us, too. But like you I'm not looking forward to all the morning rush and afternoon speeding to games, practices, and whatever else. I try and squeeze in four hours of writing when they leave in the morning, but sometimes it's hard with laundry, groceries, etc...

  5. I think your first day pics are terrific. Not many kids are excited about school, and at least you got them to stand still for the camera, right?

  6. LOL, definitely cute! I think it's adorable how your youngest children wanted to wear backpacks even though they didn't need to... :)

  7. Look at all your little menz! So cute. And I love how your littlest is cheesing it up. He obviously still thinks school is some magical place where you get to eat candy all day, huh? ;)

  8. They look good. Remember, those other pictures are ideals that no one can actually achieve.

Around these parts, the first day of school is still a couple weeks away. Of course, we ended later than the rest of the country, too.

  9. Cute pics! I suppose this time of year does bring up lots of emotions, for both kids and adults. My little boy is still too little for school, but I know it's coming. They grow so darn fast:)

  10. Your kids are super cute!

My husband has the responsibility of dropping off the kids at daycare, so he lets my daughter (age 4) dress herself. So when I picked her up for preschool orientation, I heaved a sigh. She was wearing the same shirt she wore for preschool day one last year (and they take photos to tape to their take-home folder). Ah well.

  11. Your kids start a week early. I think they look like a good magazine cover...and more realistic. The top pic shows them all smiling....I was never like that. i am more like your child with the green sneakers:) I think you have a right to be proud.

  12. Adorable! They have the brightest smiles, and that half embarrassed blush in the back, epic. Kids rock. I'm wishing you much sanity through the early mornings, lunch packing and homework!

  13. They look SO cute! And how cool that the youngest wanted to be like their older brothers and wear backpacks. Their turn will come soon enough.
