In the Arms of an Angel

Thanks to everyone who entered my Giveaway for the $10 Amazon gift card. The raffle has ended and the winner is....

Magen Corrie.

Congratulations, Magen!

That was so much fun that I may have to do more Giveaways!

On to a heavier note...

A couple weeks ago, tragedy hit our little rural North Carolina town. A twelve-year-old boy from my son's school took his own life. As the shock wears off and the questions roll in, I think every parent is asking themselves, "How could this happen?" And "What can I do to prevent this from happening to one of my children?"

When I first learned of the tragic news, I just wanted to hold my boys close and never let go. I wanted to tell them a million and one times how much I loved them. In those first few days after the death of this sweet boy, I couldn't hug my children enough. And tears flowed freely whether I wanted them to or not.

I think it hit me hard because the young boy was so close to my own son's age, and the family lives right down the street in an affluent neighborhood. This is a family who only wanted the best for their children. A family who seemed to have it all. And all of a sudden I wondered, "How well do I know my own son? Has he ever felt that lonely, overwhelmed? What kind of pressure am I putting on my own children?" My heart ached not only for the family and friends this child left behind, but also for the pain this boy must have felt. Enough pain that he decided to take his life because of it. Obviously none of us know all the details leading up to his decision to take his life, but what a tragic, tragic accident.

This tragedy occurred at a time when I was writing a story about a troubled boy. And even though I will never be able to capture that kind of pain, I did try to draw on the sorrow I felt in the aftermath of such a tragedy. I only hope I did the story justice.

So, hug your children tight and never forget to tell them how much you love them. And even more importantly, how proud you are of all they've accomplished. You never know, that might be the one thing they need to hear more than anything else in this world. And please, say a prayer for this family as they try to pick up the pieces of their life.

The 777 Challenge

I'm sure many of you have heard of this thing going around the blogosphere referred to as the 777 Challenge. So I was stoked when my good friend and critique partner, Leandra Wallace, tagged me for the challenge. I've been trying to decide what WIP I want to share with you all, and I finally decided on a contemporary romance I wrote about a year ago. It's been "sitting" for a while, but still desperately needs to be revised. And when the time comes, I may need some beta readers...

                                                                             ~~~~~
She glanced at her neighbors across the aisle; a young couple cuddled up together, the girl’s head resting on the boy’s shoulder. A twinge of jealousy washed over her. She and Jack used to be like that. Young and in love and barely able to keep their hands off each other, but somewhere along the way things changed. He changed. She changed. They grew apart.
An ache started in Tara’s chest and moved up her throat. She tried to swallow the lump that formed, but she couldn’t get rid of it, almost as if she had a giant chicken bone lodged there, making it nearly impossible to swallow and even more impossible to breathe. Tears stung her eyes as a thousand memories flooded forth. Memories of good times, laughter, and a distinct fire between her and Jack. A fire that over time diminished and then gradually extinguished.
Turning away from the couple, she focused on the wispy clouds and quickly wiped her tears. She wouldn’t cry over him. She refused to give him the satisfaction.
Focus on the anger. Focus on the anger.
Unfortunately, even those words couldn’t ease the pain in her chest and ache in her heart.
So, here's how the Challenge works. Choose a manuscript or WIP, find the 7th page, scroll down to the 7th line, and share the next 7 lines or so. Piece of cake. And now, I get to choose who I want to tag for this fun challenge....
IWSG & What's Up Wednesday
The first Wednesday of every month is reserved for the Insecure Writers Support Group (also known as IWSG). If you are interested in joining this awesome group where we post our insecurities, triumphs, fears, and failures, as well as offer encouragement to fellow writers, you can sign up HERE. Created by the amazing Alex Cavanaugh, IWSG is a wonderful group to be a part of. Be sure to check out the co-hosts for this month: C. Lee McKenzie, Tracy Jo, Melanie Schulz, and LG Keltner!
I think I'm having a hard time with motivation lately. I'm not very motivated to blog. *gasp* I'm not very motivated to clean my house. And I think I figured out the culprit.
Writing.
When I am in the writing mode (i.e. working on a novel), everything else takes a back seat, including, but not limited to, my children. And my husband. And maybe some friends. Oh, and don't even think about asking me to make dinner. That's what corn dogs and chicken nuggets are for. Awful, I know.
I do feel guilty...maybe for a small moment until I immerse myself in the next scene of my WIP. If only I had a clone to do my blogging, and little fairies to clean my house, and a gourmet chef to cook healthy, grease-free meals, it would be the perfect life. Right?
So, here's a question for you...When you are neck-deep in a novel, do you shirk your other responsibilities? Do you become crazy obsessed like I do? I'd love to know...
Now on to What's Up Wednesday!
What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by sisters Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers connect on this writing journey.
WHAT I'M READING
Nothing. Might have something to do with that crazy obsession of mine...
WHAT I'M WRITING
I finished the first draft of my YA dystopian novel, the first book in a three book series! Yay! The novel weighs in at 91,000 words, but I want to rewrite the ending. I'm finding that this ending is tricky because I want to give enough that the reader is satisfied, but I have to leave some questions unanswered to entice the reader to want to read the next book.
WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
Other authors. And their successes. Last week was my week to host on Unicorn Bell, the writing and critique blog, and I had the opportunity to interview some AMAZING authors. They inspire me, AND all of YOU inspire me. So, thank you.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
 The Frozen party for my five-year-old is drawing nigh and YIKES! I've been too busy writing and not preparing for this party. Time to kick it into high gear!
Also, this is the last week of school for my young'un's, so summer craziness fun is about to set in. You may not see me around the blogosphere as much, but I will be here every Wednesday (or I will try to be) for What's Up Wednesday and IWSG (first Wednesday of the month). Occasionally, I will grace you with an author interview or guest post.
Ciao for now!
What's Up Wednesday & An Announcement
 Sooo...
I've been a bit of a lame blogger lately. I apologize if I haven't visited your blog in a while, I will try to remedy that ASAP!! With summer coming and my current manuscript sucking my spare time, I find myself less on the blogging scene. But, I am glad that I have WUW to keep me accountable with my blogging, writing, and reading.
What's Up Wednesday is a weekly blog hop created by sisters Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers connect on this writing journey.
WHAT I'M READING
I am currently reading Insurgent, the second book in Veronica Roth's Divergent series. I seriously love these books and the world she created. I find myself saying out loud, "That was a good line. A really good line." I love it when a writer makes me think like that!
WHAT I'M WRITING
I crossed genre's and am working on the first draft of my own Divergent series. Just kidding. But it is a YA dystopian novel (with romantic elements--of course!) Even though I'm at 70,000 words, I still have a long way to go to get it in the right shape.
WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
Truthfully? The Divergent series. I love it when a book draws me in and I'm lost in the story. When I stay up too late at night because I can't put it down. That's what Veronica's books have done to me, and I feel inspired because that's the kind of writer I want to be. I don't just want to write a good story. I want to write a story that pulls the reader in and makes them think about it long after the last page is read. It's an art. It's a talent, and I'm struggling to find it, develop it, and strap it to my back.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Well, I know what I haven't been doing...Sleeping! I find myself to be most productive in my writing AFTER the kids are asleep, in between the hours of 9:00 pm -1:00 am. I love having a few interrupted hours where it is just me, my laptop, my music, my characters, and my ideas (it's a nighttime party!) Although, I have been known to nod off from time to time, but then again, a little power nap never hurts!
Also, I'm excited to announce that the amazing Lori Maclaughlin nominated me for a Liebster Award! Hoo-Rah!! Be sure to stop back on Friday where I post all the details, answer some questions about myself, and nominate a few others. Hmm, will you be one of them...
Have a wonderful week! See you Friday! :)
What's Up Wednesday
I recently joined a weekly blog hop created by sisters Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers connect on this writing journey. I thought What's Up Wednesday would be a good way for me to review my progress during the week and stay motivated to read and write (especially now that I have some accountability!)
So, here goes...
WHAT I'M READING
I'm almost done reading Killing Ruby Rose, the debut novel by Jessie Humphries. I love the main character, Ruby Rose, and her saucy personality. I've laughed out loud several times because she is just so dang funny, and this is a YA Contemporary thriller! Jessie has done a great job of weaving in the danger, romance, and teenage humor.
WHAT I'M WRITING
I am neck-deep in my YA dystopian novel (part one of a Trilogy). I told my hubs I only wanted two things for Mother's Day -- a clean house and time to write. Thankfully, he let me do that most of the day on Saturday while he and the boys mopped the floor. Win win!!
WHAT INSPIRES ME RIGHT NOW
My children. I just want to create something they would be excited to read. I want them to think, "I have the coolest mom, ever." So I'm taking it easy on the romance and leaning more towards exciting elements and a fast-paced plot. We'll see what happens.
WHAT ELSE I'VE BEEN UP TO
Oh, boy. Where to begin...I have baseball games coming out the ying yang. We are in our final week of regular season baseball before playoffs begin, and I am about to vomit baseballs. If I have to sit and watch another baseball game, I might scream. Literally. Unfortunately, we've had a game every night this week and will continue to have one every night except Friday. Ahhh! Can't wait for the season to be over!
Also, my little man is turning 5 and wants a Frozen party. If you've checked out my blog at all, you might have noticed I have a page dedicated to Parties. I LOVE planning and throwing parties, so I've got to get crackin' on this Frozen bash. I'll keep you updated on how it turns out.
Mostly, I'm ready for school to be over. I'm tired of driving kids back and forth to school, I'm sick of the homework and projects, and I'm done with baseball! (Did I mention that already?)
Hope you're having a good week! What are you up to?
