A is for Autumn

I love autumn. I love that autumn has a smell. Did you know it has a smell? I am a "smells" person. I have the nose of a dog (sometimes not such a good thing, especially when I'm the one who first smells the "poopy" diaper and gets stuck changing it).

Anyways, back to the smell of autumn. Picture this--a cool October evening, a hint of the scent of damp leaves and the smell of smoke wafting from a wood-burning fireplace. That is the smell of autumn.

What do I love about autumn? I love that after the humid, hot days of a Southern summer, the fall cools things off. The leaves turn brilliant colors of red, burnt orange, and gold. The days are shorter (which means an earlier bedtime for all my "smalls"). It is a time of high school football games (a big event in the South), and small town carnivals.

Then there are the Apple Festivals. Have you ever been to one? Apple cider, apple cake, and apple donuts are a few things you might find at an apple festival. Not to mention the bluegrass bands, hayrides, and overflowing barrels of apples in a variety of colors and flavors.

I grew up going to an Apple Festival in the mountains every autumn with my grandparents. I can still remember the sights, sounds, and smells, and since my grandparents passed away several years ago, it's a memory I cherish.

Do you love Autumn as much as I do? What are your favorite things about fall? Have you ever been to an apple festival?

  1. It's autumn here in New Zealand where I live. I enjoy the cooler weather, but our days have been sunny. I love the colors of the leaves and fresh apples. I think it's a lovely time of the year.

  2. I like those moments when summer is still switching over to autumn, and it's still warm but there's a broader palette of colours outside.

  3. Autumn and Spring are my favourite seasons. Autumn colours are astounding. An apple festival must be something like harvest festival - lovely memories. All the best for the A-Z, Kristin.

  4. I think I do! Too bad we don't live closer. We could Autumn chat during walks, warm coffee, & some good books. Autumn, especially where I live, has an abundance of experiences waiting for its audience. From colors, textures, sounds, and scents, it has it all!

    1. I know! Wish we did live closer! You're in Maine, right? I've always wanted to go to Maine--my husband and I have been trying to plan a trip for the last two years to Maine, but it never works out. I might have to contact you for Maine tips! :)

  5. I'm in Australia. The top bit. I'm told Autumn is on its way. I love the Autumn air in the UK, my home. The bite in the air, the late sunshine if we're lucky. Leaves under your feet. Nice site, by the way. Good luck with the challenge.

  6. Autumn definitely has a smell. It's cool and crisp.
And when it's almost Autumn, I know it's time for football season!

  7. Hi Kristen, and welcome to A to Challenge! Autumn is by far my favorite time of the year. I miss the seasonal changes where I live now. But I do go back to Michigan every year and often make it a point to go back to see the leaves change color.

    1. Thanks, Stephen! I would miss the season changes if we lived someplace where they didn't occur.

  8. I love fall too, it's my fave season. Although after the winter we've had in Massachusetts, I'm not real eager to be ushering in another winter season, as much as I loathe the hot & humid days of summer.

  9. Autumn is beautiful here up in New England. My favorite fall traditions are long leaf-peeping drives and going apple picking, which includes, of course, the partaking of apple cider and donuts!

  11. Autumn smells like sneezing to me, but I LOVE pumpkins and Halloween and colorful trees (which we don't get in Florida) and apple cider... Mmm. Give me some apple cider with my cheese and I'm in heaven.

  12. I do love autumn, though as my kids have gotten older, that smell of changing leaves now means my son (and next year it will be sons) is heading back to college. But it is a beautiful time in West Virginia.

  13. I love the fall! As a kid my family would always got to Goberts Pumpkin Patch in IL and enjoyed all of their festivities! In college Clayton made it a tradition to go to Apple Butterfest in OH ever year. Now that we're parents we take our kids up to Hendersonville, NC every year for apple picking!

    1. Good memories! I don't know if we've tried apple picking in Hendersonville yet. We went to the mountains a couple years ago, but not sure where. Oh! Your Apple Butterfest reminded me of another delish apple delight--apple butter!! Yum!

  14. Never been to an apple festival, to the best of my knowledge we don't have them here in Ireland, though I don't mind being proven wrong as I'd love to attend. I love apple cider (warmed and with a stick of cinnamon), I love Pumpkin Pie, Running through leaves (yes even at my age), dancing in puddles (when the back allows) and the crispness of the 'just starting to need jumpers' time of year...but I'm so looking forward to summer lol. Well done on a great start for A to Z 2014

    1. Yes! Pregnancy was always the worst with the smells! My husband couldn't come near me because I always "smelled" something! Too funny!

  19. In India, we have Summer, Monsoon, Winter, so I haven't experienced Autumn. Of course, I've seen photographs of colourful trees during autumn.
Apples (and oranges) are my favourite fruits, so, since you mention Apple Fairs, I guess I would like autumn.
