L is for "Let it Go"

This month I'm participating in the A to Z blogging challenge and posting every day in April (except Sundays) with the corresponding letter of the day. The theme I chose for this year is 26 Days of Gratitude. I'll be posting about people, places, things, and events in my life I'm grateful for. Today is the letter...

Sometimes we just have to "let it go".

I appreciate all of the advice, words of encouragement, and support my IWSG (Insecure Writer Support Group) post last month generated from fellow writers and friends. Thank you to all those who left a comment. A general theme I noticed and something I've been trying to tell myself for years, is that sometimes you just have to "let it go".

I can't always have a perfectly clean house. I don't have to fix gourmet dinners (not that I ever did that in the first place). I don't have to be the perfect mom and wife. I can't do it all, and that's okay. I'm coming to terms with the fact that it's okay to have overflowing baskets of laundry, dirty dishes in the sink, or unrevised projects on my computer, if it means I get to take my small children to the park for a couple hours.

It's so easy to be hard on myself. It's so easy to want to curl up in bed and not get out to face all that I have to do. But if I just repeat in my head, "let it go", it helps me prioritize. I'm thankful for this phrase that was brought to my attention by the popular Disney movie, Frozen. Cute movie and great song sung by Idina Menzel, but I actually have a version that I like even better. If you're a mother and haven't seen this one yet, then you're in for a real treat. Sit back, relax, and let go for a minute. Trust me, you won't regret it!

In case you have trouble viewing the first one, I uploaded a different Mom Parody that isn't as good as the first, but still gets the point across. Enjoy!

  1. We've always told people, we can homeschool, have a clean house, and cook meals from scratch, but only two of those three at any time. You have to let some things go to enjoy what's happening right now. For me, I know the housework will be there whether I skip spending time with the kids or not.

  2. So very true! I've learned over the past year, especially, that I simply cannot do everything. One or two other aspects of my life has to be sacrificed at any given time to fit everything else in. (The video didn't work, FYI)

  3. I haven't seen Frozen, but I've heard the song. It's been stuck in my head for two days LOL!

You're right, though. It's not possible to do everything. Sometimes you just have to accept that there aren't always quite enough hours in the day!

  4. It is easy to rough ourselves up over our shortcomings. But are they really shortcomings or is it our expectations that are out-of-this-world? Yeah, probably the latter.

  5. We can't get it all done anyway, right?
Bummer, they blocked the content of the video.

  6. This is the second blog I've stumbled upon today with this theme for letter, L. Are you all trying to tell me something? Kidding, of course.

It's a good tip, and easily forgotten when we become engrossed in our daily activities and our exciting projects. Taking a break, letting some things slide a little, helps the mind generate new ideas and prepare to take on new challenges.

  7. I saw that video on facebook about a week ago. I'm with you. This mommying thing is tricky business, but if living in NYC taught me anything it was that surviving is occasionally a very admirable thing. You can't run yourself ragged and expect to be anything other than dead weight. It's a lesson I'm still trying to process, but I'll get there one day. =) Here's to doing your best...within reason!

  8. I love the original, and I love all of the parodies! They're hilarious, but the message is a really important one - I'm glad it's your theme today!

  9. Letting Go is one of the hardest lessons I had to learn. I also wanted the clean house, perfect health, perfect marriage, the list goes on and on. Then, the reality hits and you realize, it really is okay for things not to be perfect - it helps us appreciate the times when they are.

  10. It's so true. Letting it go can be hard, though.

  11. Housework is on hold right now for the A-Z (and my children are grown and gone!). But Liz is right. Letting go is sometimes hard, and can take time to process.

  12. Love the parody video! And I love your post. I've been struggling with not being able to let go of things for a long time. It's so hard to admit to yourself that you can't do everything that needs doing. I'm getting there, but I'm definitely a work in progress.
